Description

Slippery elm bark is known as a demulcent, emollient, and nutritive tonic. When mixed with water, the powdered bark forms a thick mucilage that coats and soothes tissues throughout the digestive tract, throat, urinary system, and respiratory passages. Folk traditions have worked with slippery elm to support digestive irritation, reflux, ulcers, sore throat, cough, diarrhea, urinary discomfort, and general tissue healing. It has also been used externally in poultices for skin irritation and wound care.

Slippery elm carries energetic medicine around protection, containment, nourishment, and gentle repair. It teaches the wisdom of slowing down and allowing tissues to soften, hydrate, and restore themselves.

Slippery elm’s mucilage may interfere with the absorption of medications and supplements. Take at least 1–2 hours away from medications. Avoid use during pregnancy unless guided by a qualified healthcare practitioner, as traditional use includes uterine influence. Individuals with severe bowel obstruction or difficulty swallowing should use with caution.

Slippery elm teaches reverence for slow-growing medicine — protection includes protecting the plant itself.
