Description
St. John’s wort is known as a nervine, antidepressant-supportive herb, and tissue repair ally. Folk traditions have worked with it to support emotional balance, ease mild to moderate depression, soothe nerve pain, support wound healing, calm inflammation, and restore nervous system integrity after injury or chronic stress. Topically, it has long been used for nerve-rich areas, burns, bruises, and damaged tissue.
St. John’s wort carries energetic medicine around light restoration, boundary strengthening, protection, and helping the nervous system move out of darkness and stagnation. It is often associated with reclaiming vitality after grief, trauma, or emotional heaviness.
St. John’s wort interacts with many prescription medications by increasing liver enzyme activity, which can reduce medication effectiveness. This includes antidepressants, birth control, hormone therapies, blood thinners, heart medications, transplant medications, HIV medications, seizure medications, and many others. Do not combine with SSRIs, MAOIs, or other antidepressants due to risk of serotonin syndrome. St. John’s wort may increase photosensitivity, making skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid use during pregnancy or breastfeeding without professional guidance. Discontinue use if anxiety, agitation, digestive upset, or skin sensitivity occurs. Always consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before internal use if taking any medications.
Topical use carries far fewer systemic interactions but should still be used cautiously on sun-exposed skin.
St. John’s wort teaches the medicine of illumination — but even sunlight must be respected and dosed wisely.
