Description

Tansy was historically used as a bitter, stimulant, and vermifuge (parasite-clearing herb), as well as for digestive stagnation, menstrual regulation, and external applications for insects and pests. It was also traditionally burned or carried for protection and purification. Modern herbal practice approaches tansy with extreme caution due to its volatile oil content and potential toxicity.

Tansy carries energetic medicine around protection, banishing, boundary enforcement, and strong clearing. It has long been associated with warding unwanted influences, breaking stagnant patterns, and asserting energetic sovereignty. This is not gentle medicine — it is medicine of firm lines and discernment.

Tansy contains thujone and other volatile compounds that can be toxic if ingested. Internal use is not recommended. Tansy may cause neurological symptoms, liver stress, digestive irritation, and uterine stimulation. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding and should never be used by children. Avoid topical use on broken skin or in concentrated preparations, as it may cause irritation or sensitization. Individuals with seizure disorders, liver disease, or sensitivity to plants in the Asteraceae (daisy) family should avoid use. Essential oil of tansy should never be used internally and must be handled only by trained professionals.

Tansy teaches the medicine of boundaries — not everything powerful is meant to be taken into the body.
